Applying to UCAS: a one day preparatory workshop for Year 12 students

While the formal UCAS application process occurs in October of Year 13, most Heads of Sixth Form recognise the importance of early preparation: making sure their students have thought carefully about their chosen courses, preferred institutions and their own application. This one-day workshop brings all elements of the preparation together to ensure students approach the application process in an informed and confident manner.

The workshop covers the whole application process: selecting the course and institution, completing the application form and giving guidance about what to look out for on 'open days'. Students will have the opportunity to reflect carefully on how they can best present themselves and what they can be doing now to increase their chances of success. The practical activities will provide students with the opportunity to identify their own needs and think carefully about how to choose a university that best suits them.

During the day they will produce a plan for their personal statement, draft out key paragraphs, practise their interview techniques and write an action plan. The students will be supported in planning the time they have leading up to the application process, therefore ensuring that they avoid last minute panics and are able to make wise future choices.

This demanding and stimulating programme will give your students more confidence as they embark on the UCAS journey and will prepare them in tangible ways to present themselves effectively and make the best choices. The day will be very interactive and require each student's full participation.

Deputy Head of Sixth Form comment:

The UCAS workshop was an invaluable learning experience for our students: clarifying issues and, in particular helping with the preparation and completion of personal statements. Many of the students were nervous about the interview process and going to university. After the workshop, however, they were motivated about completing their application and excited about attending university.

All of my enquiries about the organisation of the day were responded to with efficiency and professionalism and I found your organisation accommodating and approachable at all times.

Many thanks for providing what was indeed a unique experience for our students and I hope that you continue to provide this service in the future.

Natalie Lawrence, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Belfairs High School, Essex
